Biorem’s ultrafiltration membranes offer important advantages over conventional filtration. These include an absolute barrier to pathogens, ability to treat a wide range of water sources and high tolerance for changes in feed water quality. Our membranes have a tight pore size and highly uniform pore structure. This provides superior control of all microbial contaminants including viruses, bacteria and parasites. It also reduces suspended solids content to less than 0.01 micron. Our systems operate in a dead-end, outside-in mode similar to conventional filtration. Benefits to our customers include high water recovery, consistent water quality, low operating cost and peace of mind.
We offer membranes in two chemistries. Our NIPS (Non-solvent Induced Phase Separation) membranes are asymmetric, are made from a highly hydrophilic PVDF chemistry, and deliver low fouling rates and low pressure drop. Our TIPS (Thermally Induced Phase Separation) membranes have highly uniform symmetric pores, and are five times stronger than NIPS membranes. This results in very high flux, long life and low maintenance requirements. Customer can choose the chemistry that suits his needs, as both are available in three standard module sizes.
The dead-end operation achieves very high recovery as all water fed during the filtration cycle is recovered as product. Periodic backwash using treated water dislodges solids accumulated in pores. This is followed by air flush of the outside surfaces to dislodge suspended solids sticking to the surface. A water wash then removes these solids from the modules. Chemically enhanced cleaning, in which a chemical is added to the backwash water, is also implemented to dissolve biofilm and colloidal solids in membrane pores. The modules are installed vertically to permit air flush and integrity test.
Modules are standardized to facilitate use as replacement in many existing systems. Biorem can also custom make modules to fit a specific project, if the size of the project justifies it. Modules are available in three lengths, each in a 0.225 m diameter to simplify installation. Product brochures are available upon request.
