The harsh, difficult operating conditions at liquid terminals can put a great deal of stress on the pumping equipment that is used to keep them running 24/7/365.

While the range of products that may pass through a liquid storage terminal is wide and varying, the operating conditions at most terminals are similar—harsh, often corrosive atmospheres that require around-the-clock equipment reliability.

This is an area where Griswold centrifugal pumps shine brightly.

All Pumps supplied a whole batch of Griswold centrifugal pumps which are installed at one of the largest liquid storage terminals in Australia.

In addition… The winning advantage, in this case, was the outstanding lead time for this project!

centrigual-versus-positive-displacement-945x630

The centrifugal pump is the most used pump type in the world. The principle is simple, well-described and thoroughly tested, and the pump is robust, effective and relatively inexpensive to produce.

Positive displacement pumps, on the other hand, operate by forcing a fixed volume of fluid from the inlet pressure section of the pump into the discharge zone of the pump. Positive-displacement pumps frequently are used in hydraulic systems at pressures ranging up to 5000 psi.

Lobe pump is a type of positive displacement pump that offers superb sanitary qualities, high efficiency, reliability, corrosion resistance, and good clean-in-place and sterilise-in-place (CIP/SIP) characteristics.

Before selecting the right pump for the job, we need to understand:

  1. Total head or pressure against which it must operate
  2. Desired flow rate
  3. Suction lift
  4. Fluid characteristics (temperature, corrosiveness, etc.)

The piping system and pump interact to determine the operating point of pumps: flow rate and pressure.

Basic Comparison

Centrifugal Positive Displacement
Mechanics Imparts velocity to the liquid resulting in a pressure at the outlet (pressure is created and flow results). Captures confined amounts of liquid and transfers it from the suction to the discharge port (flow is created and pressure results).
Performance Flow varies with changing pressure. Flow is constant with changing pressure.
Viscosity Efficiency decreases with increasing viscosity due to frictional losses inside the pump (typically not used on viscosities above 850 cSt). Efficiency increases with increasing viscosity.
Efficiency Efficiency peaks at best-efficiency-point. At higher or lower pressures, efficiency decreases. Efficiency increases with increasing pressure.
Inlet Conditions Liquid must be in the pump to create a pressure differential. A dry pump will not prime on its own. Negative pressure is created at the inlet port. A dry pump will prime on its own.

Know More

Air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps are widely used across various industries due to their versatility and reliability, transferring nearly all types of liquid even without electricity. Since their introduction in 1955, AODD pumps have come a long way through advancements in technology.

WHAT IS AN AODD PUMP?

AODD pumps are positive displacement pumps mainly used for transferring a wide range of products—from water to highly solid-laden liquids—with compressed air. An alternative to centrifugal pumps,  sealless AODD pumps are used in industries such as oil and gas, food processing, chemical, paint, electronics, and pharmaceutical.

The continuous supply of air inside the pump results in the repetitive back-and-forth action of two flexible diaphragms connected to a rod. This constant motion drives liquid out of one chamber for discharge while filling the other chamber.

BENEFITS OF AODD PUMPS

AODD pumps provide extra benefits that similar pumps do not, including the following:

1. Simple Construction

In addition to AODD pumps' versatility, their ease of use and simple design are considered selling factors.

AODD pumps have no close-fitting, sliding, or spinning elements, thus requiring minimum assembly. Once installed, the pumps can function with less maintenance. They are referred to as "plug-and-play" pumps since they are ready to use as soon as they are attached to a compressed air connection.

AODD pumps can also run dry without causing damage to costly internal wear components or breaking an expensive motor. This means they don't fail or get clogged despite the lack of lubrication.

Finally, air-operated double diaphragm pumps are lightweight and portable—easy to dismantle, clean, maintain and repair compared with other types of industrial pumps with complex construction and parts.

2. Versatility

Diaphragm pumps come with various levels of customisation. They are available in different sizes and materials depending on their purpose. These characteristics make AODD pumps useful in a wide range of applications that deal with diverse media, including clean and grey water, harsh chemicals, sewage, and naphtha. They can handle everything from water to 90 per cent solids with ease. Their customisable design also ensures costs are kept at a minimum.

Note that the working fluid greatly influences the pump material selection. For example, a small metal pump for moving water would be dissolved by strong acids. In this case, a plastic pump would be better. On the other hand, the flow rate requirement and potential pressure conditions will determine the correct pump size.

3. Safe Design

Air powers an AODD pump rather than fuel or electricity. A diaphragm pump is also hermetically sealed, thus minimising contamination risks. Additionally, diaphragm pumps are available with an ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) certified version for use in applications where it is dangerous to use electricity.

4. Flexibility & Discharge

AODD pump sizes range from 6.35 to 101.6 mm, with flow rates between 19 and 1,100 litres per minute. Manufacturers also offer a range of flexible sizes to provide users with a more suitable pump for their unique applications.

AODD pumps can generate flows as low as 4.5 litres per minute to as high as 1060 litres per minute. Standard duty air-operated double diaphragm pumps operate at a ratio of 1:1 with pneumatic pressures reaching up to 8.6 bar. However, users are given options of higher-pressure pumps of a 2:1 ratio with pressures reaching 16.5 bar. There is also the choice of a 3:1 ratio where pumps can achieve pneumatic pressures over 20.6 bar.

THE PERFECT AODD PUMP APPLICATIONS

These are just some of the industries that trust AODD pumps to transfer liquids and viscous fluids:

  • Automotive
  • Ceramics
  • Chemical
  • Construction
  • Food and Beverage
  • Marine
  • Mining
  • Oil and Gas
  • Paints and Coatings
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Pulp and Paper
  • Water and Wastewater

Known for their durability and reliability, our Kwikflo fire hydrant booster system and Javelin pumps are called into action at Kumtor Gold Mine.

As part of the commissioning, All Pumps service manager, Raffaele, along with another technician started the long trek from Sydney to Kyrgyzstan. They arrived in Bishkek, then travelled 6 hours up the mountains to 4150 metres above sea level. With reduced oxygen level, the task of breathing alone was an effort.

Once onsite, they complete the installation and commissioning of the clients new fire system including a 6102 turbo diesel fire hydrant, a 75kw electric sprinkler hydrant and a large Javelin 32 Jacking pump. Once the water in the pipe work had melted, they were able to start the pipe heating and fire the pumps within a day.

On the final day of commissioning, Raffaele presented and operated the system in a complete simulation of an emergency, including an emergency with a power outage. All inspectors and management were very impressed with its automatic operation and gave All Pumps a huge tick of approval. Despite the freezing temperatures and high altitude, the pump commissioning was a huge success and once again proved the reliability of our pumps.
